- Clinician Scientist, Research, University of Toronto
- Tier 1 Canada Research Chair in Accelerated Translational Acute Care, Professor, Critical Care Medicine, University of Toronto
Dr. Claudia dos Santos’ major research focus is acute lung injury, which can result from biomolecular or biophysical insults to the lungs, including infection and mechanical injury caused by mechanical ventilation. Her lab is dedicated to understanding interactions between patients and breathing machines and developing new approaches to identify individuals at higher risk of lung injury, as well as improving diagnosis, treatment, and monitoring of recovery.
Her research uses a range of model systems, from epithelial cell stretch models to animal models of lung injury. She also uses whole-genome approaches and computational strategies to identify novel molecular targets and analyze complex biological data. In addition, her work explores how and why critically ill patients develop multi-organ failure, with active collaborations involving clinical researchers conducting trials of novel mechanical ventilation strategies.
