The Peter & Judith Bowie Advancing Women in STEM Program

The Peter & Judith Bowie Advancing Women in STEM Program will fund a total of two TMU female-identifying incoming first-year graduate students (Masters or PhD) for one year.

Background:

The Peter & Judith Bowie Advancing Women in STEM Program is available to iBEST investigators to support a student enrolled in a TMU graduate program. Applications in which the student will be co-supervised by Unity Health Toronto and TMU investigators will be given priority. Awarded iBEST investigators will receive $10K in support of their graduate student stipend for one year (non-renewable).

Eligibility:

  • Applicant(s) must be an iBEST Member(s).
  • This opportunity is available to incoming first-year graduate students (Masters or PhD) for one year. 
  • Investigators don’t need to have a student already identified to apply for this opportunity.
  • This opportunity is available to support either domestic or international students. Please note that this is a subsidy to support a graduate student stipend for one year (non-renewable), and all additional costs are the investigator’s responsibility. 


Funding Allocation: 

$10,000 per position (from September 2023 to August 2024)

Review Criteria:

(1) Proposed mentorship opportunities to support/ encourage women in science
a. Are the proposed mentorship opportunities fostering the retention of women in STEM careers by providing tools to support women through their career progression?


(2) Proposed activities

a. Are the proposed activities fostering the development of young investigators?

b. Are the proposed activities adequate for a student at the graduate level?

(3) Overall Impact

a. Does the experience/ skills/ learnings arising from this internship have the potential to help with the graduate student’s career development?


Timeline: 

April 30th – Application deadline

May – Awarded investigators are selected and notified 

September – Students start their graduate program
