Lecture Takeaways

The main takeaways are as follows:

  • Understanding the diverse nature of nanoparticles and uncovering the barriers that hinder their efficiency is crucial for successful biomedical applications.
  • Emphasizing the importance of good practices and using biologically relevant models in research enhances our ability to translate findings into practical applications.

Biography

Dr. Hagar Labouta is a scientist at Unity Health Toronto and an assistant professor at the Leslie Dan Faculty of Pharmacy and Institute of Biomedical Engineering at the University of Toronto. Her research experience includes nanomedicine, drug delivery and biomedical engineering. Dr. Labouta’s team is using microfluidics to design lipid-based nanoparticles with the aim of breaching biological barriers, with a particular focus on applications related to Women’s Health. To ensure clinical translation of the novel therapies designed in her lab, her team develops humanized organ-on-a-chip models for preclinical evaluation of nanoparticles. Dr. Labouta is a co-inventor on an international patent for the development of nanosystems for intracellular targeting.
