Title: “Wireless Medical Sensors: From Patients in Labs to Labs in Patients”

Dr. Virgilio Valente
Assistant Professor
Department of Electrical, Computer, and Biomedical Engineering
Ryerson University

Date: Friday, April 1, 2022 | 1pm – 2pm EDT

Join Zoom Meeting: https://ryerson.zoom.us/j/98575787413?pwd=TklUWk9QbXNkYlFESXRLV2ZWZ2cxdz09

Host: Dr. Scott Tsai

LECTURE TAKEAWAYS:

  • Learn about sensors and how they are progressively giving more freedom to patients to manage their own health.
  • Understand why wearable sensors are great for preventative care, while in-body sensors are essential for efficient disease management.
  • Learn about microelectronic engineering. When engineers design these medical devices, things can get really tiny.

BIOGRAPHY

Dr. Virgilio Valente is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Electrical, Computer, and Biomedical Engineering at Ryerson University. In 2011, he received his PhD in electronic engineering from University College London, U.K. His journey has led him to studying, working and teaching in multiple countries and institutions. Between 2011 and 2020, he held postdoctoral and faculty positions at University College London and Delft University of Technology, The Netherlands. In 2015, he also joined Tetrivis LTD, U.K. as an Integrated Circuits (IC) Design Engineer. In 2017, Dr. Valente was a Visiting Scholar in the Nano Lab at Tufts University, U.S.

Dr. Valente’s research focuses on the design of integrated sensor systems for insertable and injectable wireless biosensor networks, with medical applications including wireless health monitoring, diagnostics and closed-loop therapy. Dr. Valente is a Senior Member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), a member of the IEEE BioCAS Technical Committee and a member of the 2019 IEEE ICECS Technical Program Committee. In 2019, he served as Track Chair at the IEEE Asia Pacific Conference on Circuits and Systems (APCCAS) held in Bangkok, Thailand.
