Biography

Dr. Hon Leong has been a scientist at Sunnybrook Research Institute in Toronto, ON, since 2019. His research program has focused on localized prostate cancer since 2012. From 2016 to 2019, he was the Director of Urologic Sciences at Mayo Clinic, Rochester, MN, and from 2014 to 2016, he was an Assistant Professor at the University of Western Ontario. Dr. Leong completed his master’s degree (2003) in Cardiac Metabolism and a Ph.D. (2008) in Transplant Immunology and Thrombosis, both at the University of British Columbia. During his Ph.D., he was a CIHR and British Heart Foundation Grant recipient and spent three years at the Royal Brompton and Harefield Hospital, London, UK, where he was an Honorary Fellow. Dr. Leong was also an Honorary Fellow at the Imperial College, UK. In 2008, he turned to cancer research and pursued his post-doctoral fellowship with Professor Ann Chambers at London Health Sciences Center, London, ON. 

In 2011, Dr. Leong became the first Canadian to receive a post-doctoral fellowship from the United States Department of Defense Prostate Cancer Research Program. He was awarded the Prostate Cancer Canada/Movember Rising Star Award in 2013 and 2015 and has received two patents based on blood tests for the accurate diagnosis of clinically significant prostate cancer.
